Is It Mandatory to Sign Up for
Medicare at Age 65?
No law says you must sign up for Medicare you turn 65. Depending on your individual situation, you may be able to delay signing up for Medicare without a penalty. If you’re still working at age 65 and have an employer-sponsored plan that’s as good as Medicare’s coverage (or covered under your spouse’s plan), you can keep that coverage until it ends.
When your employer-sponsored coverage ends, you’ll have a Special Enrollment Period that allows you to enroll in Medicare without a penalty. Just be sure to double-check that the coverage is credible, meaning it’s as good as Medicare’s.

When Can I Apply For Medicare?
When a person turns 65, the Initial Enrollment Period, or IEP, starts. You are qualified initially to start receiving Medicare benefits during this first enrollment period, which lasts for seven months. That period begins 3 months before the month of your 65th birthday, the month of your 65th birthday, and the three months following the month of your 65th birthday.
Suppose you’re already getting retirement benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board when you turn 65. In that case, you will be automatically enrolled in Part A and Part B starting the first day of the month you turn 65.
